To my understanding, DL lets BE pax including Medallions pay for seats 72 hours prior to departure but at 24 hours the option disappears and it's whatever the system assigns, though in my experience agents are able to change BE seats to regular Y seats that aren't labeled as C+, Preferred, or exit rows.
I haven't had a BE ticket recently, but a couple times in 2020 I got the seat selection offer email at T-5d*. But per Twitter rep at the time this is purely a seat selection fee, it does not convert the BE ticket to a main cabin so still ineligible for upgrades etc. The fee does count towards MQDs and RDMs though, lol.
*I see that I posted about it upthread and said T-66h, but in looking at the saved email it actually was 5 days minus 6 hours (and bad math on the 66)
