However, if you have had to phone to have the inbound added seperatly then you're not able to amend the flights online. So I don't se the point in phoning to add a dummy inbound just to hve to phone again in a few days time unless you would be happy to keep the inbound as a safety net just incase your preferred inbound is not available.

Thanks, I was considering trying this a couple of months ago but didn't get a reply to the same question, so didn't chance it.
as it happens, I hadn't booked the return as part of the outbound booking so it wouldn't have worked. Furthermore... my inbound was snapped up bang on midnight while I was queueing to speak to call centre. I suspect I wouldn't have got it trying the above method.
I think there are no guarantees, but best chance is to ensure you are on phone to call centre in good time before midnight. I'm still not sure what happens if 2 agents go for tickets at same time!?
