AA started boarding from 2L about a year ago where gate space allowed. We had one gate out of 5 at my airport where we could actually do it. So it's not frequently done, but it's now an option. I wish everybody did it that way as I really like it when I'm in first and don't have to worry about getting hit in the head with everyone walking by with their carryons.
