"Does anyone have any suggestions about which is the simplest and easiest way to check-in for WT+ going Syd to LHR? (And also for the return?) We won't have much baggage, probably one light checked bag each. Have never used online or telephone checkin, and was intending to use the regular desk checkin."

Telephone check in is great and will be available earlier than internet check in ( Internet check in opens 24hrs prior to departure whereas telephone will be open from 15:00 on day prior to travel ) so will allow you to snaffle the best seats available.

"One complicating factor: looks like Y is full, W is full (bucket shows WX T0), but J and F are almost empty (high yield aircraft via Sin), so what mode is best for our chances at the U word? We are booked in full W, but are both BA blue (will hit silver in a few months)/QF club bronze, and will be in blazer + slacks + open collared shirt and, for my wife, whatever the female equivalent is."

If you are lucky you may be but you are far down the pecking order for upgrading. By being suitably dressed you have a better chance. If you are lucky, you'll get to the airport and be handed a shiny J class boarding pass.

If you can get hold of an address in Europe to use to set up a BA account, I would recommend getting your account moved there since this trip would get you almost enough miles to get you a silver card in the European scheme. If you are booked as a single segment each way, then you'll get 270 tier credits, if you are booked on SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR separately ( or if you can separate it ( eg BA16 to SIN and BA10 to LHR) you will get 360 Tier credits which will leave you v close to the 400 you need for Silver
