Yes, but there's 2 issues1. Time - likelihood of selling it is lower as there is less lead time
2. Cost
ORD-PHL is frequently twice what ORD-PHL-DCA costs (example price, not debating the specific city pairs). By buying and throwing away the second segment, AA lost additional revenue.
