Aspire airline change fee no longer valuable
In the past getting this credit was a no-brainer. I travel on United a lot for work and sometimes change plans. A $200 change fee eats up a lot of a $250 credit in one transaction. But with the change fees gone for now with Covid, I'm trying to figure out of I should change my airline for the benefit for this year. If I had been paying closer attention I really should have downgraded this card but I'm about 5 weeks after the annual fee hit so outside the 30-day window for a refund. Might as well make the best of it.
So, with UA 1MM I don't pay for bags or economy plus. Upgrades usually don't count, I think. And no ticket change fees. Wifi charges sometimes count depending on provider but I doubt I'd hit $250. What else could I do with UA?
Or...
I fly AS. I'm a gold so I haven't paid change fees even before covid - just goes back to my wallet account. Again, don't pay for bags. Not enough wifi charges to justify.
Or...
I occasionally fly WN. But again, no bag charges and no change fees....
So what's the current best thinking on how to get one's money's worth with this benefit? It makes the card $250 less valuable to me and that definitely changes the calculus on the annual fee. My CSR card is applying travel credits to grocery shopping so no problem there - only the Amex.
