We plan to push the baby around in the stroller w/ infant car seat, gate check the stroller, and take the infant car seat on board. What should we do with the car seat base -- should check that at the ticket counter for free, and get rid of it?
I recommend packing it in a bag and checking it. That is what we always do, though it takes up almost a full suitcase. Its not worth tying up your hands to take on board, and wouldn’t pink tag it due to the wear and tear if it’s pink tagged on its own. I also wouldn’t throw it in a stroller travel bag with the stroller that gets pink tagged since it could fall out and will get beat up.
If you do take this approach, I’m not sure if the baggage drop agent will check it for free under the infant allowance if it’s in a suitcase (probably will depend on the agent). I’d imagine if the suitcase is bare aside from the base and you show them, they should show some grace.
Just be sure you are familiar with how to secure the car seat in a car without the base in case your bag with the base gets lost.
