SFO-HNL-GUM-HKG routing would give you about 1,400 more miles than a direct SFO-HKG. Price was a little bit more than the direct routing, but a good price to pay for a short visit to HNL. Personally I don't fly for business so I have all the incentives to take the long way. And opportunities to SDC to island hopper (successful 1 time). And if your HNL-GUM is late, causing you to misconnect, then you get a free day on Guam (although that has never happened to me - the few times they were late, they held the GUM-HKG flight)
