Flight cancellation and compensation question

Hi all,

Background
I had a flight from ISB-LHR on the 26th Dec which got cancelled. There were two flights on the day and unfortunately mine got cancelled whereas the first flight departed at the time mine was supposed to leave. Furthermore, upon enquiring with alternative flights with CS, the flight the following day was full. I asked to be put on a QR codeshare flight as they were departing at the normal times with no cancellation and delays but was denied. I was eventually given a flight on BA departing 2 days later to my original flight.

Question
1. I requested compensation online but just received a response that this cancellation falls under extraordinary circumstances due to the pandemic so will not be awarded any. Is this a valid enough reason when flights with other carriers were operating normally and they could have put me on QR?
2. Can I contest this or do you think I stand a chance taking this up in MCOL?

Thanks guys
