We are skiing Keystone and Breckinridge in CO, where we are local. Visitors do not appear to be put off by the fact that Summit County is in Level Red, Severe Risk of infection. They also don’t get the idea of wearing masks in lift lines and on the lifts and gondolas. We only have a small sample, but our routine in line is “would you mind wearing your mask,” and then “where are you from?” 100% of non mask wearers are out of staters. I would say there is 70% compliance overall with mask wearing. Of County covid hospital admissions in the last two weeks 21 have been non residents and 3 residents. Even though there is a ban on multi household rentals that is common as well. I think most come here wanting to ski and forget about Covid, and so pretend it doesn’t exist. I predict that we will shut down skiing in the next few weeks because of hospital capacity running short from people arriving infected and needing care. As for lifts and gondolas, they will not force you to ride with strangers, but there is no disinfecting going on during the day, and so when you get into a gondola there may have been 6 people in there, maskless, offloading 5 seconds before you get in.
Update: Still only 70% mask wearing in line at Keystone (which, by the way, has three different locations of Covid outbreaks amongst mountain employees). Got into a confrontation with a young couple standing 3 feet behind us in line with a 15 minute wait for the lift. Neither were wearing masks. I turned around and asked them to put their masks on. They said "Why, we are 6 feet away from you." They weren't. Maybe 4 feet at the most. In any event both Summit County and State of CO require mask wearing in lift lines and on lifts, and to stay 6 feet apart, with signs to this effect clearly posted. A ski patroller overheard the commotion, came over, told them to back away and to put their masks up. They argued. When the woman halfheartedly pulled her buff up to her chin, the patroller said she had to tuck it in under her goggles. This is on the mountain, and so these two would have already been told about masks at the base area lifts, where masks are offered for free to all skiers. I don't know why Vail Resorts doesn't just kick these folks off the mountain. With a couple of hundred people observing this whole thing, word would get out: Wear Your Masks!
