This new airport is a mixed bag as far as I am concerned. My employer would pay for a one day "rest" layover on TATL flights, and IST was one of my favorite connections to go into the very enjoyable city. Ground transportation from IST was easy and there were lots of hotel options near the airport if I had an early flight. Ground transportation to this more distant airport is not as convenient and there is a real lack of hotel choice if one needs to stay close to the airport. On the other hand the old IST terminal was a real pit, and I am sure ISL will be much nicer, so there are tradeoffs.

Once this coronavirus nightmare is over, I hope to be back in eastern Europe, but with a different employer which does not have the paid layover option. I have gotten so fond of doing that, however, I will probably pay for it on my own. The difference will be that I will have to schedule flights where I do not have to be at the airport early so that I can book a hotel in the old town. If I can't, I will just do the overnight layover in another favorite, VIE.
