BMI (or whoever broke it or handled it last on long-haul) are responsible for repairs/ exchanges if you make report right after the flight.
Besides, repair in US or UK will cost as much as new Samsonite in Singapore (or Bangkok). Those cuties come below 50US each - maybe even 20-30, if on sale. I have two, on top of several other rollers.
I also prefer the cute little roller Samsonite, but the light roomy construction is esier to damage than the heavy bulky Tumi roller , for example. If I use Samsonite, I'll buy one new once in a while anyway.
It wasn't my suitcase, so I kept out of the discussions at the time but BMI did give my Fiance a replacement case (the sort you can get for 10-15GBP in Oxford Street

), he was returning to Japan the next day and wasn't in the mood to make a fuss.
If I ever go to SIN I'll bear your advice in mind and stock up (I'd be lost without my own one). But as I mentioned, the suitcase that needs repair has a GREAT sentimental value for my partner. He schooled in the UK whilst his parents lived in Japan, The Phillippines and Canary Islands, and he associates that case with his mother's visits to see him. It is pretty old now.
I will be going to Selfridges this week. Thanks for the advice! I'll be meeting my partner in New York early next month, he'll be
so happy to have his case back!!
