If you boil it down there is tension between the goals of the various parties:
- LH group wants to encourage loyalty, ideally rewarding travellers in proportion to their profitability.
- Obviously a system based on "profitability" is a non-starter.
- "Revenue" is only a crude substitute but there aren't too many other alternatives.
- Travellers want:
- status that is easy to achieve, but not too easy so that it's value is diluted
- a system that is easy to understand, but still "fair"
The new system doesn't seem to tick any of the boxes...

- It's not "fair" because the "continental" split only has two tiers and buckets together hugely disparate routes and spends.
The seem to have just focused on simplicity and mostly ignored everything else...
I agree, though I'd add that they basically copied BA and AFKL to create a transparent points system, not much more...
