BA to Dubai connecting to EK - how long to leave between flights

I'm looking at a trip LHR-DXB on BA then connecting onto EK. I assume I am right that I will have to collect my baggage and re-check in since there is no interline agreement between BA and Emirates? Does this mean actually exiting the airport through passport control and customs and checking back in in the Departures area or does it take place in the transit area - apologies for ignorance its something I've never had to do!

How long to allow for this? Looking at schedules on the way out there is 3 hrs between BA scheduled landing and Emirates departure. On way back there is 7hrs which should be plenty of course. I realise that there is some risk in doing this if there are schedule changes, cancellations or long delays.

This is for next Christmas so hopefully COVID will be behind us ????
