Dhuey, I fully agree with you - a high deductible is the cheapest way for anyone to get auto insurance. Unfortunately, most people will not buy into this logic, simply because insurance is largely driven by irrational fear. Most view it as an 'investment', which defies logic, and leads a majority of humanity to waste a ton of money, but makes the insurance companies very happy.
Back before Radio Shack went bankrupt, I bought some item at one of their stores for around $20. The sales agent gave me a hard sell on an extended warranty for $2. No thanks -- I think I'll self-insure that one.
The deals on offer at car rental counters are often even worse for the renter than that $2 extended warranty Radio Shack wanted to sell me.
