I sort of have mixed opinions on this, but overall it seems to be a waste of everyone's time and money to me. Everything seems to indicate travel will not rebound to a point that would necessitate these furloughed employees by the end of March when this is set to run out. Airlines are now going to have to recall all their furloughed staff, reactivate them, and re-train them which is a pretty lengthy process in itself, not to mention the costs associated with it. In addition, employees that are called back then have no choice but to go back to work or lose their unemployment benefits, which, with the extra $300/week, depending on the state is likely a better deal than what many of them make working for AA to begin with.
On one hand, it's nice to see the junior employees being reactivated and going back to work, however I can't help but think it's sort of pointless and rather than going through this whole process only to have it all reversed three months later, it's probably better to just wait until travel rebounds a bit more and start bringing people back because they're actually needed.
