Key features are:
Ultra portable.
Widescreen.
DVD-CDR/W
USB
Firewire
PCMCIA
Wireless
Decent processor speed.

It will get heavy use at home, in the office and while travelling. Oh and I plan to buy it in the US.
Just helped someone through this same transition (and helped myself to the lifebook so my boyfreind got a new laptop for home!). The replacement we got for my friend was, believe it or not, the Apple 17" Powerbook G4.

The lifebook had always been WAAAY too small for him (one of his hands would dwarf the entire keyboard). Now, he didn't really need an ultraportable as he travelled infrequently and needed a DTR machine when he got there. He's LOVING the apple. He nearly wept as he went on about how much better it is than anything else out there and how could it have such low market share?

I think I might just join him with an apple when I'm ready for a new one. Actually, I would have done it last time, but it was right when tablets were coming out, and I really wanted to try this functionality first. Of course, I travel enough that the 17" would be too big, but just the same.
