Depending on your charging volume and what you value in a reward, the fees can be worth it. Calculate the difference in earning and compare that to the cost to decide.

A free the first year SPG Amex with $30 fee thereafter is well worth it to me...

But if you're truly allergic to fees, why not an Amtrak Mastercard? No fee, points convert to United, Continental, Midwest Express, Hilton...
