Once confirmed by the pax it is up to the pax to contact LH and request to be put back on the original flight if such opportunity arises - this should be done well in advance and not last minute at the gate. This clearly didn't happen here and the OP became aware of the reinstated flight way too late.

It’s a fact that LH are in a flight for survival atm, again along with many airlines, the pandemic situation is severely impacting their operations in all aspects.
LH could have just as easily sent him an email asking if OP would prefer the original flight just as it sent an email asking if he wanted to change in the first place. I often feel like FT'ers have tunnel vision when it comes to airline issues. Sure, OP could have checked on his own, but most people do not have the same knowledge or resources as members here.
To put things in another perspective, imagine you booked a table at a restaurant for 5:00pm. You show up at 5:00pm and are told the table isn't available after all, but you can wait 3 hours and have your table then. You wait the three hours and are later told that a table was available all along because another party unexpectedly cancelled. Sure, you could have physically checked, but what reasonable person would do this? Wouldn't you be upset with the restaurant for changing your plans but not notifying you that a table was in fact available?
I often feel like the perspective on this forum is that people should be punished for not knowing a little secret or detail.
