I'm not certain this has much of an advantage over a normal checkout if you still have to stop by the register.
It was a pilot in the Michigan and Northern Indiana locations, but I think is now chainwide (added it in Indianapolis within the last year or so). I tried it, but usually only get a few things at a time and there's enough self-checkout stations that it's usually quicker just to scan everything when checking out. I could see the usefulness if the cart is full, you use reusable bags, and they have self-checkout lanes.

The special Shop & Scan "registers" in the one store by me don't seem active yet, but that location also redid their self-checkout setup entirely recently—previously it had 6 in a pod and 4 longer lanes, now it's like many Walmarts where it's a "pen."

I think as a whole, they're trying some things that are maybe lower-effort/lower-risk to see what people like/gravitate towards. Since they're significantly smaller than Walmart, Kroger, and Target, adding some features to an app and rolling out dedicated lanes in some stores may not be that tough to do.
