Residence Inn, Merida, Yucatan, Mexico [Master Thread]
I was at this property last weekend, Platinum.
Relatively new property, I believe less than a year old. About 15-20 minutes to MID and about 15-20 minutes to Merida Centro. Free parking. I did not inquire about late checkout.
Check-in, in COVID times included a temperature check and forced hand sanitizer. (Although neither occurred any other time during my multiple entrances throughout a 3-day period.) Otherwise check-in was normal. Welcome gift was a choice of 500 points, a bottle of water, or a food item from the sundry store. I chose the 500 points. I asked about upgrades, but was told that all king rooms were essentially the same.
Standard design king room; basically the same layout as newer RIs in the US. I did like the shower in that the faucet is located on the opposite wall of the shower head. Bulk amenities in the shower. A small bar of soap provided for the sink. Towels were of decent quality and made in the US – that’s a change. Bedding was comfortable. TV was mainly Mexican channels, but also had Fox News, CNN, and the big 4 US networks – Miami-based.
The only issue with the work area was the lack of plugs. Two plugs were on the desktop – one used by the TV and one used by the desk lamp. Kitchen area was fairly generic. All kitchenware was located in the lower cabinets instead of the upper cabinets. Coffee was provided for an 8 cup coffeemaker, but I think the proportions were wrong, in that a 8 cup pot was fairly weak. I do not recall ever staying in a US RI that a roll of paper towels, a dish towel, and dish soap were not provided – none here. Not sure where one would acquire these items. Maybe at the front desk? Oh, there was also a dishwasher – a rarity in Mexico. And the first property that I've ever stayed that had spare light bulbs in a basket on the kitchen counter!
A staff-served breakfast buffet was available during a short time window, 7-9 AM. Normal continental breakfast items and 6 hot dishes each day. White scrambled and regular scrambled eggs as well as red and green chilaquiles and a potato dish were every morning. Meats changed morning to morning. Coffee was only available during the designated breakfast hours.
Housekeeping surprised me. With US RIs, housekeeping is not daily. There was signage in the breakfast area re: reduced housekeeping. But housekeeping was in my room after the first night. I was not prepared for that as I left the room a bit of a mess. I inquired at the front desk and she told me that due to COVID, they expected guests would want daily housekeeping. I think something was lost in translation. No further housekeeping occurred per my request.
There is a rooftop pool with a nice view of the city. New loungers and a couple of hammocks. Maybe in better times, the bar will operate. Anyhow, I went there one afternoon to read; took a bath towel. After about 10 minutes, a staff member brought me two pool towels. (Cameras are ubiquitous in the complex.)
I inquired as to Uber vs. taxi to the airport. Front desk staff told me about $250 MXD for a taxi and about $150 MXD for Uber. The actual Uber ride, around 8 AM on Monday, was $220 MXD. Also for a taxi, allow ½ hour from the front desk calling for it to arrive vs. Uber about 10-15 minutes.
I wonder how well the rooms will wear? My room, 5th floor, had many minor workmanship issues. Nothing affecting the comfort or usability of the room; just long-term appearance.
