Unfortunately for UA, it comes at the expense of additional trips booked on other airlines instead. So for example, due to this promo, instead of 4-6 UA trips in Q1 I might only book 3.

I think UA would prefer the first 3 to be the 3 highest

Think an interesting twist would have been for UA to say the three highest tickets will earn the bonus at the close of the promotion. I’m assuming loads will still be “““light””” in Q1 2021 to put it generously and therefore cheaper tickets are not displacing higher fare tickets...in other words UA’s leaving $$$ on the table by not going after all business vs. late 2019 where they were discouraging cheaper tickets in favor more expensive ones as the LF was high.
