Baby stroller strategy for connecting flights

Hi, we'll be traveling cross-country (with 1 stop) next month with our new baby (who will be 3.5 months old at the time). We've never flown with a baby before, so we have no idea what to expect.

Our stroller is a "toddler stroller with a detachable infant car seat," meaning it has three pieces: 1) toddler stroller, 2) infant car seat (which snaps into either the toddler stroller or the infant car seat base), 3) infant car seat base. It's this: https://www.target.com/p/chicco-mini...y/-/A-76149132

It's under 20 lbs, so it seems like we could gate check it if we want. But what's the point if we have a connecting flight? Might as well just check it at the ticket counter and be done with it? I'm reading some old threads where people say it's easier just to have the baby in the baby carrier, in any event.

I'm PLT and wife is nothing, but we'll be on the same PNR. From "Each ticketed customer is allowed 1 stroller and 1 car seat to be checked free of charge," I take it we'd be able to check this entire thing free of charge and still have our 2 + 2 bag allotment.
