It's actually not high on my priority list either even though I think it's highly doable. I just think that it's unfortunate that UA may have given some people the impression that what counts towards MM status is actual miles flown while giving mileage credit based on a metric that underestimates how many miles you actually flew.
But that's not what UA states for the program. Here's what their website says about distance flown:

*Flight distance is defined as the miles scheduled for a specific flight, as determined solely by United."
