I have a feeling T-Mobile will work out for me in Jpn.
If I can reliably get close to 128kbps throughout Kanto plain and in/around larger regional cities, then I think that'll be good enough.
Kind of worried about their coverage in rural USA where I go skiing and hiking, but that's a whole other topic.
Thanks, I did not realize such option existed.
If you really want to test this out, do this in your chrome desktop

Set to useragent android mobile (so you get the mobile pages)
Setup your own 2g profile 128kbps up/down (I believe page uses bits/s) plus 150ms latency (since tmobile proxies you back stateside)
Then see if you're happy. Real experience would be slightly slower too
For me, with the cheapglobal data sim (ais sim2 fly $10/4GB/8days, or the 3hkg roaming day passes for $2, or the 365day 3UK $30/6GB sim), I'm fine for spending the extra money
probably stick with tmobile 2g for a layover, if my global sim doesn't cover the country
