Correct, AA tried something different with this promo in the “spirit of giving” where the bonus is greater if you buy for someone else.

I’ve bought AA miles at 1.7 cents before, and happily redeemed them at 5 cents. Won’t be buying them now with the uncertainty of when I’ll be able to redeem on a partner airline and travel internationally again.
