As part of the CARES Act the 7.5% Excise tax is being waived through December 31st so there is an AAdvantage to purchasing miles, if it makes sense for a particular person, to do so before year's end.

I rarely purchase return tickets so the savings is often significant for one-way. For example, 75K will get you Q-Suites on QR from LAX-CPT. At 1.75 cpm, that is a little over $1,300 to offset a $3,000+ one-way J fare. Sometimes it makes sense to purchase for other than a top-up especially if you don't need EQM/EQD. It really is a YMMV.
