So let’s just hypothetically say that they allowed people to use the credit on flights, perhaps up to $100 per flight purchased. While I do agree that more people would use the credit, not all of them would. Perhaps they could work something out with the airlines where are they share in the discount with them. And finally, let us not forget that they are making something like 3% on the purchases, so the more that the entice people to use their card, the more money they make, which probably makes up for those improved credits and likely provides even more revenue than with the credit that is much harder to use.
I also think that human beings are creatures of habit, so what American Express wants people to do is to use their card for everything. So if they are using it routinely for travel, perhaps they also use it a bit more routinely for their other purchases as well. I do think that there are ways to improve upon what they’re doing that would be revenue positive, in all likelihood.
Amex regularly offers discounts through Amex travel. Although it’s not that widely marketed
