Meal vouchers? There is so little options at most airports that it would just lead your to further disappointment. Domestically, it can be hard to find anything in a lot of the mid-sized and small airports (increasingly, it seems a lot of places are permanently closed), and everywhere, the places left open seem slammed most of the time because of the limited options and lack of meal service means a lot of people coming off longer hauls disembark hangry.
I don't travel a lot during the pandemic, but I quickly learned that when I do, I need to pack what I want to eat (usually some hard cheeses, dry salami, and some nuts).
But, I do agree with the OP that it is a little bit ridiculous how much airlines have cut inflight service.
Sure, fares are cheaper, but this depends on the market; from my home market, fares by and large are NOT cheaper. But why is that an excuse anyways? The value to most travelers of food/drink service compared to the material cost is a big delta.
And sure, more F is filled with frequent flyers, but heaven forbid some elites other than the top CK members get thrown a bone.
Cutting the inexpensive stuff that yields value seems foolish when it is demand growth that is needed. The planes need paid for! For the more casual flyers with flexible travel demand, travel doesn't sound very enticing when customer service is a bare minimum.
And sure, the meals in F are not all that great in isolation, but the entirety of meal, drink, and snack service is indeed a big part of the value, and the 1 box on flights long enough and having to call the flight attendant to get served any drink in F takes a lot of the value away. Dare I mention the dramatic PDB thread (which I think is the least important part of the overall F service)
