They really make this difficult.
I've had several instances where my Aeroplan-branded card was declined for purchasing AC tix (but not gift cards).
It's been resolved quickly by the issuing bank, but apparently the irony of not being able to purchase travel on a carrier affinity card is lost on them. Doesn't stop me from bringing it up though. In the nicest possible way of course!
