To the OP, this can work, but it can also get really tricky. I found that most hotels are willing to work with you, but essentially you need to change names twice. Book under your name to get benefits, then change during the stay to get a bill in your spouses name then change it back to your name to ensure Marriott credit. That's tough, not all hotels will happily do this. I would add your spouses name as a second guest name in the reservation when booking it.
I think he has a valid point because with this kind of "project" it's possible that the employer finds out about another guest staying with the employee (in the very least the folio will show that 2 guests were checked in). Now normally that isn't a problem but that depends on their travel policy.
Adding the spouse as the second guest won't help anyone. How long/expensive is this stay? Is it worth it to make a big production out of it? For 2-3 nights I wouldn't even bother. A week maybe.
