OK, so AF/KLM airport agents would cancel the ticket and (remaining) segments on the PNR, but then DL could find the ticket and would give a credit for its value (or refund) according to DL's fare rules and policies.

It still seems easier to call now rather than possibly have to fight later and spend even more time on the issue.
