If you have a same day roundtrip, online check in is available for only your first flight if it's booked as such.
If you have a same day return trip booked as separate segments (e.g. under a separate PNR), you can check in online for the multiple segments.
Your best bet is to check in for your PHX-BUR return at a kiosk upon arrival at BUR. Assuming that you have a few hours before the turn, you should have little trouble avoiding the dreaded "C" boarding pass.
