Guess the bean counters at SQ figured out with the projected low passenger demand and cargo weight they can use A359 instead.
a 20% load factor on the regular A359 mean that they can fly the regular 280T A350 to JFK.
200 less pax mean around 20000kg lesser in weight (assuming each pax is around 80kg plus 20kg luggage). This will make big different in the fuel consumption.
The ULR can fly further than JFK with its design with the 160++ paxes n reduced cargo.
