Travel Certificate "Scam" makes UA Look Bad

Like many very-frequent flyers, I've had flights summarily canceled by UA this year due to the Covid-19 situation. I have previously read/heard of the difficulties with the request of refunds from the carrier, and really didn't want to expend the time and annoyance trying to get money back only to be used on another ticket.

So like many, I've "let it ride".

I've become annoyed however at UA's attempts to get MY money back from me by selling me grossly overpriced tickets in some kind of online shell game.

When I logged into the iPhone app last week, I was presented with this "gift" - book a trip to Fort Lauderdale (or a number of other destinations) using IN FULL my travel certificate balance - which currently stands at $502! So they'll gladly sell me a ticket to Fort Lauderdale, with a "Standard price" of $100 for MY TRAVEL CERTIFICATE BALANCE OF $502!

REALLY?

They can't expect this borderline fraud would work with a very-frequent-flyer. And imagine the blowback if a rube off the street took this "deal".

We're all in difficult times. It's unfortunate that UA marketing management thought this a good idea.

Five times the price zeros out the money UA owes me?
