If you make a deposit far in advance of arrival and then the hotel goes out of business, I wonder whether you could get the deposit back easily.
There are also time limits on chargebacks, but these restrictions don't seem to apply to plane tickets (for USA cards) because the clock starts when the service is scheduled to be provided. Maybe there's a similar rule for hotel deposits.
BTW, I still remember seeing the rack rates posted for Minneapolis area hotels in advance of the RNC back in 2008. Regular rooms were typically over $3000 per night. I think everything was updated upwards for the Super Bowl a couple years ago.
