Chapter 16: Michel Hotel Landshut, Bavaria, Germany

For the full Michel Hotel Landshut review and a few more pictures thrown in, you can check out my website (Disclaimer: This link is to a website to which I contribute/have a financial interest).

Landshut hotel

Although Landshut is one of Bavaria’s prettiest cities and is home to some important industries, there weren’t too many exciting accommodation options to choose from.In the end I settled for the Michel Hotel Landshut, which had a good rate for 62 euro for a standard single room with breakfast included. Although the hotel did look rather dated on the pictures, it had decent ratings and an excellent riverside location right at the entrance of the old town centre.

When I arrived at the hotel it was already dark.

Check-in

The reception area of the Michel Hotel Landshut is rather unglamorous and looked a bit sterile. It was almost 9pm by the time I arrived, which fortunately meant there were no queues at the reception desk.

A friendly receptionist had my booking looked up in seconds and some moments later I had the key card to my room in hand. The walk to my second floor room was fairly long. With 147 rooms, the Michel Hotel Landshut isn’t exactly small and is one of Landshut’s biggest hotels.

Standard room

My standard room was exactly what I expected it to be: rather dated. The interior oozed 1990s ‘charm’ and is certainly not something to get excited about. There was also quite a bit of wear and tear. I really felt it could do with a major revamp.

When looking past the outdated design, the room wasn’t actually that bad at all. It was certainly spacious and most importantly perfectly clean. There was plenty of storage space, a work desk and even a seating corner.

The bed was soft and comfortable too and in the end I managed to have a good night of sleep.

Room facilities

The room had a satellite TV but did not have air-conditioning or a fridge. WiFi internet was reliable and fast and power sockets in the room were plentiful, including right next to the bed above the nightstands.

There was also a water kettle and some tea bags and instant coffee in the cupboard.

Upon entering the room I found a strange-looking black sacket with the hotel logo imprinted on it on my bed, which turned out to contain Haribo gummy bears. I thought it was a nice touch!

Bathroom

Although I didn’t know it was possible, the bathroom did perhaps look even more dated than the room itself with its old-fashioned tile floors and tile walls. On the plus side, it was spotlessly clean and had the usual toiletries and a hairdryer.

Hotel breakfast

Breakfast was included in my room rate and was served in an orangery overlooking the River Isar. Breakfast is buffet style and I thought the choice was quite good.

There are plenty of breads and pastries, cold cuts, fruit preserves, cereals and yoghurts as well as hot options such as eggs, bacon and sausages.

It was not a large buffet spread nor the best ever quality, but the breakfast certainly met my expectations.

In short

The Michel Hotel Landshut is best described as a giant throwback to the 1990s. The hotel certainly has a very dated interior which not only shows in the room and bathroom itself, but also in the public spaces such as the hotel bar and breakfast room. I felt it could certainly do with a major renovation!

That said, I did have a pleasant stay at the hotel. The room was clean, I slept well, my interactions with the staff were all pleasant and the breakfast buffet was decent.

I wouldn’t mind to stay again at the Michel Hotel Landshut on a next visit to this charming Bavarian town, although I would certainly be open for alternatives as well.
