Golden Puppy, my situation is identical.
I called the Japanese Embassy and learned there is no way I am gaining entry to the country w/o a legitimate reason to do so.
So I converted my cheap ticket into an MR. Returning to CA on same 787 on which I arrrive (from YVR). I also built in two long stopovers.
Its not ideal - but - the only alternative was another voucher.
