Can moderators delete obvious spam/advertisements?

There was another recent wave of spam cigarette ads by the now-banned user cigarettesmania to Newsstand, Mileage Run, and TravelBuzz.

Is it possible for the moderators to delete these posts/threads if there have been no replies? Banning the user doesn't make his ad any less effective, as his advertisement still gets viewed by everyone in the forum. Doesn't seem lilke adequate punishment.

Maybe flogging would be more effective.
