I take it that #3 isn't SOP?
Prior to 9-11 I'd just give my wife my license and she would get the BP,they saw the photo ID just not with me. I've used option #3, I also thought it was SOP.
I've also just quickly shown a skycap my license and left my wife with the luggage. It only takes a second for them to check the name and picture. Now with online and kiosk check in I don't see why families would have different letters.
I don't know if it's SOP but I was told that if you're selected for SSSS you can ask to pre-board. This was from an FAA supervisor I was talking to while waiting to board. He said that was a courtesy the airlines extend to compensate you for your inconvenience.
