MSPeconomist already said, it never hurts to call and ask politely to either cancel or postpone the stay. I am firmly in the camp of the savings on nonrefundable rates doesn't offset the risk. So I never book them for neither business nor leisure travel. Of course that is a personal decision. Each to their own...
