Certainly understand why they would make this change but with that change they need to also make a change to the testing cycle. It seems that 72 hours can be VERY challenging for the test partners that have been chosen. If you have a flight on a Monday then you are even more challenged with the weekend getting in the way. I know here in Seattle you can't even schedule an in-person test at any approved test site from this coming weekend through Thanksgiving (all test times are already booked at all approved labs), so the only option remaining is Vault which has had mixed results with regards to turn around time. It just seems like there is still an opportunity to improve things a bit. Maybe if you have a negative test 96 hours to departure you can get on the plane but you are subjected to a secondary rapid test (a real one, the deep swab, not the one they are currently doing when you land) at your expense (and you are held at the airport till results are available.) I think it is clear that people will do whatever they need to (time and money) to pre-test and validate they are covid-free before arriving but right now the logistics to meet the requirements are very challenging. Example: See if you can find a good test scenario with a qualified lab within the 72 hour window for someone traveling SEA-OGG on 11/23 on a 5:30pm departure.
I think the next two weeks are going to get a bit messy with Thanksgiving travel. Flights are nearly full (middle seats still open) people are planning to come over. Still minimal compared to a normal year, but I fear that the process in place validate passengers will be overwhelmed when the number of people arriving increases next week.
