misterfuss after one too many times this happened to me i read on FT how two domestic one way fares are usually the same as a return. Ever since i have booked my domestic trips as two one way trips. It actually provides greater flexibility.

Note this does not work for international trips.

So this advice does not work for your current trip but something to consider for the future.
