Remembers me the last time I bought something with cash in China, last year. It was a fairly big buy, and I didn't felt I wanted to pay it throught WeChat Pay due to my account not being linked with a bank card.
It was for 269 RMB, I gave three red bills, and the staff - in an official Xiaomi store, in a fairly large city (New Tier 1) right in the city centre, had trouble to actually find the 31 RMB to hand me back. That's how much cashless China has become.
Fairly sure to assume it has moved even more towards cashless. Of course the VERY touristic areas will still handle cash, but overall, cash in China is about as much used as cash in Sweden or Norway - rarely.
