I concur with those recommending a laptop instead of a portable DVD player if you don't mind spending a bit more money. I think the choices depend on how much you want to spend. If you want to spend as little as possible, just get a generic no name DVD player that will be $250 or less. If you start spending a lot more than that, a laptop is a better deal since it can do a lot more things. A lot of competition and rebates for laptops at the moment.
