The old policy essentially allowed perpetual extensions. There were unlimited category changes and each one allowed a one year extension. In addition, there were transfer bonuses that applied to travel packages. When American miles could be used for a OW trip in first to Australia for 72.5K in miles, I converted 270K in points on more than one occasion to a 7-night old Cat 5 certificate and 144K (120 + 20% bonus) in AA miles. Although loyalty programs change and what was true until a couple of years ago isn't what is the current reality, Marriott's prior generosity apparently led some people to believe it would continue. Since Hilton and Hyatt have been more proactive with extensions, there is some hope that Marriot may extend the travel certificates further, even if it may not be the most likely scenario.
