I've done the expedited passport a couple of times. If you're near a facility, and willing to pay a little more, it's the best. I've had a turnaround in less than a business day (show up in the morning and get the passport by the afternoon). Shocking government efficiency. It will eat up several hours and you have to have proof of international travel, which just means a print out of your itinerary.
