I was always under the impression that AC handled more passenger in Calgary than WS until COVID came around. Perhaps that changed a year or two before COVID.
A more in-depth discussion of that would be off topic to this thread, and happy to have that in a more appropriate place if you like, but no, WS has been bigger at YYC for quite some time.
In any case, YYC doing away with Z1 boarding is not at all consistent with WS. If they were trying to compete with WS, they would be doing Z1 boarding like they should.
