That has been the case for years. COVID hasn't changed anything about that.
A) It's not more refined or dignified. It's disorganized, as Z2s may be in line ahead of Z1s, Z5s ahead of Z3s, etc, and when boarding for that zone commences, people are trying to figure out who's in what zone and when they can board, whether they need to go around the person in front of them, etc.
B) The only place AC used separate signs for each zone at YYC was for the LHR/FRA flights. The domestic terminal has only ever had the 1/2 and 3/5 signs, yet they still did Z1 boarding before Z2.
C) It's not more consistent with the WS/DL experience. They call their zones separately. AC is the only airline I know that bothers with separate zones and then calls them together.
And again COVID has nothing to do with any of your points.
I do agree WS does Call Zone 1 and 2 separately. What WS does not have is multiple lines. Something much more common at AC hubs.
I was always under the impression that AC handled more passenger in Calgary than WS until COVID came around. Perhaps that changed a year or two before COVID.
