I, too, think it may very well have been intentional.
First of all, it makes everyone very happy to be flying British Airways, provides good PR, without a special promotion targeting the general population, it attracts people who work in the industry, i.e., people who are plugged in to ever-changing fares and who are frequent flyers and whose clients are frequent flyers.
Heads may roll, but they may not... Who knows? Someone could end up with a promotion...
